Where the number comes from
The count is not compiled by hand and it is not estimated. It is read from the deaths reported by the Office of the Attorney General of Texas, which publishes them as part of its count of deaths of migrants found at or near the border.
This page is a tracker, not an editorial position. It reports a published figure and links back to the source so the number can be checked against the original at any time.

How the update works
A scheduled job reads the Attorney General's published figures and writes a small JSON file. This page reads that file and nothing else.
That split is deliberate. If the update machine stops, this page keeps serving the last good figure and says how old it is, rather than showing a stale number with a fresh-looking timestamp or blanking out. The date under the counter is the date of the last successful sync, always.
If the number ever looks wrong, the source is the authority and this page is the error.
